The first digital telephone system switch for routing calls came in the late 1970s from Northern Telecom, but it did not become widely available until the 1980s. Compared to analogue frequencies, digital signals travel at faster speeds, and with clearer voice quality and less static. Digital signals also require less complex peripheral equipment. Instead of transmitting in sound waves, digital signals are transmitted in binary bits.
