GENERAL
1. Can I host adult content on your
servers?
The APSIS Concept Ltd. expressly forbids the storage of, dissemination
of, linking to, or any form of association with adult content
on our servers - chiefly because of a moral stance, but also
because of their huge popularity and very high demand on storage
and bandwidth. Please review our policies.
2. Do you
support CGI, Real Audio and Real Video?
Yes, users are given their own cgi-bin directory in which
they can upload and run their own cgi scripts. We have provided
a CGI FAQ for more information on using
cgi scripts. Real Audio and Real Video are available for a
small monthly fee.
3. Can I have a public FTP server?
APSIS does not allow public FTP servers for security reasons.
We only provide a private FTP for maintaining your web site.
As an alternative we suggest offering files directly from
your web site.
4. Can I sublease or give away portions
of my web space to others?
APSIS does not allow subleasing your www.yourcompany.com
domain name (as in www.yourcompany.com/client), or free web
space given to other clients. We are offering very competitive
rates, which should appeal to anyone who needs web space.
Also, we must put a restriction on subleasing because of the
obvious abuse that could occur with our unlimited storage
and bandwidth policies.
5. How can you
offer UNLIMITED web space and bandwidth; what are the restrictions?
We've gone out of our minds!!!!!!
Actually, not yet; our findings are that a majority of people
are not going to need a great deal of storage or bandwidth
(the average web site is only 1 - 2 Mb).
In the long run it becomes mutually beneficial for all parties
- people with small web sites are not over-charged and people
with large web sites get a lot for their money; both see the
benefits of our high-speed connections. There are restrictions
however; please refer to our policies.
DOMAIN NAME
1. Who owns the Domain Name when
I register with APSIS?
You are the rightful owner of your domain. We will do the
actual registering of your domain when you sign up for an
account with us. You will be registered with Internic as the
Administrative and Billing Contact and we will be listed as
the Technical Contact for the domain.
2. What does the
fee cover?
The fee covers your right to the domain. The cost is $30 for
each year to keep the domain registered to you.
3. What if someone has a Trademark
on a name used in my Domain Name?
Internic will register almost any name that is not already
taken. It is up to the person registering the domain to be
sure they are not infringing on anyone else's trademark by
either using their exact name or close similarities.
4. How long will it take to register
my new Domain Name?
Depending on the amount of traffic Internic is currently dealing
with, your site may be registered as early as that same day
up to a week after submission.
5. How long before the world can
connect to my Domain Name?
Your domain name should be available within a couple of days
after Internic has confirmed the registration of your domain.
Please be patient since updates to different parts of the
world may take longer than others.
6. What is the process to signup
or transfer a domain to APSIS?
Signing up with APSIS is easy, just fill out our online signup
form and we will take care of the rest, such as registering
your domain and sending you confirmation when your account
is ready. If you are transferring a domain we will submit
a transfer request to Internic for you. About a day or two
after you have signed up, Internic will send you a Domain
Transfer Agreement. Just reply to Internic giving them permission
to transfer your domain and a couple days later your domain
will be transferred. All domains are registered with APSIS
as the technical contact and the customer as the billing and
administrative contact.
7. Where can I get more information
on Domain Names and related resources?
If you would like more information on Domain Names or how
the Internet structure works go to InterNIC's home page at
http://rs.internic.net
EMAIL
1. What are
POP3 Mail Server Settings?
Your POP mail server controls the incoming mail to your local
machine (computer) from which you'll access your email.
When setting up your account in Microsoft Outlook™, Outlook
Express™, Eudora or any other email client, you will be required
to input this information. Your POP mail server setting will
be your domain. For example: if you're email address is: info@yourdomain.com
then you're POP server is: mail.yourdomain.com
2. So what
are SMTP Server Settings?
Conversely, your SMTP server will oversee outgoing mail (also
in your email client). APSIS asks that members please use
their current ISP's SMTP server for checking email. This refers
to the service that is providing your Internet connection.
In the event that you cannot use your ISP's SMTP server, please
contact us.
3. How about
Email Forwarding?
Email forwarding refers to actually forwarding your email
to an existing POP account outside of your domain. For example:
webmaster@yourdomain.com can be forwarded to youraccount@yourisp.com
4. And Email
Aliasing?
Email aliasing refers to redirecting multiple email addresses
to one of your POP accounts. For example: sales@yourdomain.com
and info@yourdomain.com can both be checked at webmaster@yourdomain.com
This feature allows you to offer many different email addresses
yet maintain incoming mail through a single account.
5. What's this
about a Form Email CGI Script?
The "FormMail" script is a script created by Matt Wright that
will email the contents of any form to an email address you
specify. The quickest way to get started is to insert the
following code into your script:
<FORM
action="/cgi-bin/FormMail.pl" method="POST">
<INPUT type="hidden" name="recipient" value="yourname@yourname.com">
<INPUT type="hidden" name="subject" value="Put your email
Subject Here">
....
....
</FORM>
6. I need to
know more about your No Tolerance SPAM Policy
APSIS strictly prohibits all types of SPAM. This includes
harassment, whether through language, frequency, or size of
messages. Forging of header information is also not permitted.
APSIS does not allow unsolicited mail. This includes "Spamming"
and "Bulk Mail" sent to persons who have otherwise not requested
to receive such mail.
Please review our policies...
CGI
1. What is CGI?
CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. CGI programmes are
run on the web server to enhance the abilities of web pages,
thus making them less static. Example CGI programs are counters,
email forms, and shopping cart programmes.
2. How do I get
to CGI access?
Your cgi access has already been activated once your account
is set up.
3. How do I go
about using my CGI scripts?
To start using your cgi access, put your scripts in your /cgi-bin
directory located in your home directory. You may also use
subdirectories that branch off of your cgi-bin directory if
you need. To call your script from a browser or an html page,
use the following syntax: http://yourname.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap//
refers to the login name
you use to upload your site.
4. What language
do my CGI scripts need to be in?
Our servers currently supports scripts written for Perl 5.0.1.
5. Where can
I get some CGI programs to use on my site?
The CGI RESOURCE INDEX has over 1500 cgi resources. They are
located at http://www.cgi-resources.com/. APSIS can also provide
form and cgi functionality for your pages at a nominal cost.
6. What is the
difference between CGI and JAVA?
CGI is a scripting language that is run locally on the server
and uses the servers' resources to run your programme. Java
is a programming language that runs on almost any platform.
Java is either embedded as a script in the web page itself
or it is a compiled programme that is downloaded and run locally
on the users computer.
7. Why am I getting
a "Premature end of Script Header" or other errors?
The major error you will see when calling your script will
be the infamous "Premature end of Script Header" error. To
fix this, check the following: - Make sure that you are calling
Perl correctly (#!/usr/local/bin/perl) many times scripts
call it with a (!#/usr/bin/perl). You will find this line
usually at the very top of your script. - Be sure that you
uploaded your cgi script(s) in ASCII mode, NOT binary. CGI
scripts are text files that need to be uploaded in ASCII format.
8. My script
is asking for a baseurl or basdir; what are they?
Many scripts need to know the working directory, (the directory
that your script executes in) or the URL of your script. BASEDIR
On APSIS, your base directory is /usr/local/www/htdocs//cgi-bin/
For example, if your login name is "someone" then you would
insert the following into your web page or script: /usr/local/www/htdocs/someone/cgi-bin/
BASEURL The base URL usually refers to the URL to your website
e.g. http://www.apsisjamaica.com/ However, sometime there
is a CGIURL that will refer to the URL through which your
cgi is accessed. E.g. http://www.apsisjamaica.com/cgi- bin/cgiwrap/
/script.here
9. My script
needs to know where sendmail is.
Sendmail is located at /usr/lib/sendmail
10. What scripts
are available in the public cgi-bin directory?
We currently have a "FormMail" script, which will send you
the contents of any form to you in email. We also have a counter
script that will display a count of how many visitors come
to your site. The counter has many nice features and can also
display the date and time if you wish. Finally, we have installed
an Excite™ search engine that you can use to allow visitors
to search your website.
11. I still
need help, where can I get it?
Just email webmaster@apsisjamaica.com
if you would like help with your scripts or search engine.
Please include your domain name in this email and a detailed
description of your problem.
